Get a good deal on wheels Renting a car while on holiday is a great way to get around and find out more about the island. You probably won’t have to look far to find car rental company as there’s one on every corner, but it makes sense to shop around. Here’s some advice on what you should be asking the company before you happily drive away into the sun.
• If you book in advance, before placing the deposit, read the small print so you are aware of the conditions. • When the car is given to you, make sure it’s the class and size of car you have paid for. • Before driving away, check the car inside and out to make sure that everything works and there’s no damage that you could be made responsible for on your return. If there is alert the company. • Is there a mileage limitation and can you take the car on a ferry to visit the other islands? • Make sure all the extras you ordered such as baby seats or roof racks are with the car. Some rent-a-car companies offer free extras. • Does the car use petrol, diesel or unleaded petrol? If the company wants the car returned with a full tank, make sure that it’s full when they give it to you. They will probably keep your deposit if you don’t return the car with a full tank. • Is the car covered for a 24 hour breakdown service? Make sure you’ve got the telephone number to ring in case of a breakdown. • Find out what time the car is due back and check what the charges are if you are late. Most companies don’t charge extra if you wish to leave the car somewhere different to the original pick-up point, i.e. your hotel or the nearest airport. • Insurance is very important. Find out exactly what you are covered for, what happens if the car is stolen or is broken into. • Check whether there are any local taxes to be paid - and which will be added onto your bill. Now you know exactly what you’ve bought, what you are covered for and for how long. Enjoy your trip!
