Church Services, Ecumenical Temple This is the largest church in the Maspalomas area and is used by many different religions. There is an International Catholic Mass (celebrated in Spanish with some English) held daily at 19.30 hrs. On Saturdays, there is an additional International service at 20.30 hrs and on Sundays, International Catholic services at 10.00 hrs and 20.00 hrs. During the Winter months (October to May) Evangelical and Anglican services are also held in the Ecumenical Temple, however there are none at present. Telephone 760603
Anglican Church During the Summer months, the only Church of England services on the island are held in the Holy Trinity Church in Las Palmas city. Calle Rafael Ramirez, 13, Ciudad Jardin (Garden City). The Reverend Eric Ford celebrates Holy Communion every Sunday morning at 11.00 am and on the fourth Sunday of each month, Morning Prayer is at the same time. San Augustin There is a small church on the roof of the San Agustin Shopping Centre where an International Catholic service is celebrated on Saturday evenings at 9.30 p.m. and Sunday mornings at 11.15 a.m.
Swedish Church This church is situated in the Rocas Rojas complex in San Agustin and is a community centre for our Scandinavian residents here. In Summer it is open every day except Saturday between 10.00 and 20.00 hrs. You are welcome any day to read the Swedish newspapers, borrow books from the library, phone home, or have a cup of Swedish coffee with delicious homemade pastries. On Sundays at 18.00 hrs Divine Service is celebrated in the church. The Minister is Mona Svensson. Telephone 767206
Roman Catholic Church Arguineguia (Puerto Rico area) In this small church near the Public Health Centre in Arguineguin, there is a Catholic service, celebrated in Spanish, Sunday mornings at 11.00 hrs and a Saturday evening service at 19.30 hrs.
Cultural Events The Cultural Centre of Maspalomas is in San Fernando, the residential area of Playa del Ingles. It is a large white building, opposite the Municipal Swimming pool and Sports Pavilion. The art gallery has exhibitions all year round, both by local and other artists and sculptors. The centre also boasts a small theatre where plays are regularly performed, and the Theatrical Society (Spanish are always looking for new members. Concerts are also held here regularly. The local town council also organises Spanish course for foreign Residents, you must be registered (empadronado) as a local resident, which are held in this Centre. Concerts The Gran Canarian Tourist Board organises free Canaria folk music and Dancing concerts every weekend throughout the tourist areas. For a Programme of “What’s on”, and for other tourist information as well, call in to the Tourist Information Office in the Yumbo Shopping Centre in Playa del Ingles. Open Monday to Friday from 9.00 a.m. – 1.00 p.m. and 4.00 p.m. – 7.00 p.m. Telephone 771550
Street Markets There are several street markets (Mercadillos) during the week/ At these you can bargain and barter for articles of clothing, shoes, beachwear, pottery, handcrafts and lots more! The Tuesday market is held outdoors, in a square near the football pitch, and the Thursday one is held inside the Ancora in Arguineguian. On Wednesdays and Saturdays at San Fernando (outside the municipal market place) also on Thursdays at the Castillo del Romeral. Times 8.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. Please beware of pickpockets....
Alcoholics Anonymous The San Fernando Group now meets twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays. The Monday meeting is closed and the Thursday open. The English A.A. group meet on Fridays at 8.30 p.m. in the Ecumenical Temple, entrance through the library door.
Animal Protection Society Our local Animal Protection Society, ANAHI, does not so far have a shelter here in the south of the island, although there is one in the North, which is run by the “Cabildo” or island council. However, ANAHI does a lot of beneficial work here for our animals, and can help with strays etc. For more information contact Mrs. Renata Berger at 764226
Aces (Amigos Contra el Sida/Friends against AIDS) This voluntary organisation helps people with HIV and Aids, and also gives advice to family and friends of sufferers. They should shortly have a contact telephone number and their address is Nilo Shopping Centre, 120, Playa del Ingles.
