How to get an NIE number The Spanish authorities issue this number so that they can uniquely identify foreigners. It is equivalent to the Spanish citizens DNI, identity, number. You are legally obliged to apply for this if you are going to be making payments in to the Hacienda (Spanish Tax Authorities) Once you have applied it takes about 2-4 weeks for this to come through although be prepared, it sometimes takes much longer. Once received you should make several photocopies because if it is lost you cannot simply ask to have one re-issued you have to go through the whole application process again.

How to get residencia Anybody wising to live and work in Spain long term has to obtain a Spanish residence permit commonly referred to as residencia. The residencia card carries your photograph and thumbprint as well as your name and nationality. It also carries your identity number and has an expiry date. The residencia card shows that you have the right to reside in Spain. Once you have the card you are entitled to the same rights and privileges of any Spanish citizen. Without it you would not even be considered for bank loans, mortgages or credit. You will also have the right to all the benefits offered by the National Health Service.

Banking Resident/Non resident account
To open a resident bank account you will need your residencia/residential permit, for a non-resident account you will require your passport. You will not be able to open a resident account whilst waiting for your residencia to be processed. Despite the recent change in the law which no longer requires an EU citizen to apply for a residencia the banks are currently still demanding to see one. Once in possession of your permit you must change a non-resident account immediately to a resident one.
