Canary Islands - 02.05.2008 - The events organised to mark the Day attracted very few participants and in some cases proved a major embarrassment for the unions, who yet again failed to reach agreement on a joint demonstration. In Santa Cruz de Tenerife only 150 people turned out to support calls for more protection for workers in the main rally organised by the CC.OO. union, one of three separate events in the Tenerife capital. A union spokesman said people had lost sight of past struggles to achieve workers' rights and had become complacent in today's globalised economy.
