La Gomera - 08.05.2008 - The female goat was put down yesterday morning after the local authorities decided a rescue attempt was impossible. The distressed animal, whose bleats have echoed in Valle Gran Rey harbour for days, was stuck on the tiny ledge on the vertical face of the cliff and its plight attracted many residents and tourists. A late bid by an animal rights group to prevent the shooting failed and the goat was killed just after 7am on Wednesday.  Critics say more could have been done to resolve the situation, although the authorities insist that a rescue attempt would have been a waste of time and money. Local reports say that a helicopter had to be dispatched to assist a tourist who got into difficulty on the cliff as he tried to aid the goat last week.
