Teachers call off Wednesday's strike

The strike planned by primary and secondary teachers in the Canaries for tomorrow has been called off. Teachers' unions announced the decision late yesterday but stressed that the change of plans was not a sign of waning support in the ongoing pay dispute.

Canary Islands - 13.05.2008 - 'Members feel a 1-day strike is of little use at this stage and we have therefore decised to suspend the action and call a protest march for 28 May and take time to study other measures to keep up the pressure on the government for  fresh talks' said a union spokesman. Speculation is growing that the teachers may boycott end of year exams, particularly for pupils hoping to start university in October.
