Tanker crash causes motorway chaos

Yesterday's accident involving an oil tanker on the motorway near Arico (Tenerife) could have been much worse, say the island's authorities.

Arico - 14.05.2008 - Traffic was brought to a standstill on the TF1 motorway at around 10am when the tanker, carrying 32,000 litres of kerosene fuel, crashed into two cars. Tailbacks lasting 10 km had already formed by the time the Civil Guard managed to get to the scene and divert traffic. Fire units rushed to the scene to prevent a spillage of the fuel, which luckily did not ignite in the collision. The gridlock eased after 11.30 when the lorry and the damaged cars were removed from the motorway. The two car drivers were taken to the nearest hospital, in Playa de las Americas, to be treated for minor injuries.
