Bank appoints new boss

Tenerife's biggest bank, CajaCanarias, has appointed Alvaro Arvelo as its new chairman. His path to the chair was cleared a fortnight ago when former regional president Adan Martin withdrew his candidacy for the influential position after failing to secure enough support to stand against him.

Santa Cruz - 16.05.2008 - In a surprise move, Jose Rodriguez Fraga, mayor of Adeje, was designated the bank's deputy chairman, a role he will combine with his mayoral duties. The procedure for choosing the senior office-bearers at CajaCanarias has once again been criticised due to the influence of political parties, whose support is crucial to any appointment. Arvelo, who was director general of CajaCanarias for over a decade, admitted he had had intense and frank negotiations with parties, particularly the PSOE party, prior to his election.
