Dead prisoner family demands investigation

The family of a Gran Canaria man who died as he was being transferred to the Spanish mainland to attend court has called for an urgent investigation into the circumstances of his death.

Arucas - 24.06.2008 - Gonzalo Cedrés, who was serving a jail sentnece in Las Palmas. died last Friday under police escort on the ferry crossing between the Canaries and Cadiz. One of the members of his family received a call on her mobile phone yesterday telling her of the death and asking her to arrange for the body to be sent back to Gran Canaria. The family do not believe the official version that he died suddenly from internal bleeding due to a pre-existing condition. They also want the Spanish government to cover the cost of sending the body home, which is around 7000 euros.
