Gran Canaria - 21.07.2008 - According to the association, Grantural, the increase is due mainly to a rise in the number of locals opting for a rural holiday on the island instead of travelling to another island or further afield. The rise in bookings is interpreted as yet more evidence that the current economic crisis is biting hard and disposable income for travel has fallen sharply. A significant portion of the bookings have been made since late May, when airlines and ferry operators began to raise their fuel surcharges.
