Canary Islands - 25.07.2008 - Speaking in Lisbon, the tough-talking leader said he would consult with his colleagues in South America whether the region should respond to the EU's recent immigration directive by reviewing the status of Portuguese and Spanish nationals, particularly Canarians, who form one of the biggest foreign communities in the country. Chavez is to meet King Juan Carlos this morning, their first encounter since the Spanish monarch famously told him to 'shut up' at the Iberoamerican Summit in Chile.
