06.08.2008 - Under the latest revision, some communities such as Barcelona and Madrid are to be included in the management of the facilities and the Canaries are adamant that they too should have some say in how their airports are run. The selection has apparently been made on the number of passengers carried by each airport, but local politicians insist that other factors should be taken into account, such as the fact that being islands, and so far away from the European continent, air transport here is, “essential”. After frequent verbal agreements from the central government on several occasions and a unanimous vote in the Senate agreeing that the Canaries would be admitted within the shared management framework, Tenerife President, Ricardo Melchior is confident that there has been a mistake which will be rectified.
