President suspends holiday due to air crash

The President of the Canary Islands, Paulino Rivero, has cut short his summer holiday to be in Las Palmas to supervise in person the efforts to comfort relatives of the victims of the Madrid air crash.

Gran Canaria - 21.08.2008 - A large number of the 153 people who died yesterday on flight JK5022 are from Gran Canaria and a special crisis centre has been set up at the island's airport to cater for the next-of-kin of the victims. The mayor of Las Palmas, Jerónimo Saavedra, has also cut short a trip to Salzburg to return immediately to the island. 3 official days of mourning have been declared in the Canaries to mark the tragedy.
