79 Canarian victims on crash plane

Approximately half the victims of the Spanair plane crash in Madrid on Wednesday were from the Canaries, it has emerged.

Gran Canaria - 22.08.2008 - Passenger list checks have shown that 71 of the 153 people who died were from Gran Canaria and a further 8 are in a serious condition in hospital. The Spanish Air Force laid on aircraft to fly relatives of the dead from Las Palmas to Madrid to assist with identification in the temporary morgue set up in the city's main convention centre. The Canarian victims include several officials of local government institutions and their families.
