Puerto de la Cruz - 26.08.2008 - Spain's Department of Coasts says a deal has been reached with the company that operates the popular bars to pull them down and restore the seafront to its original state, allowing an uninterrupted view from the Avenida Colón. The bars were built in the 1990s to replace the historic Bar Columbus but have always been the subject of controversy due to their design and their occupation of part of the promenade. Puerto's mayor Lola Padrón said yesterday the demolitions were a longstanding priority for the council and will probably begin in late September.
