La Laguna mayor resigns

The mayor of Tenerife's second biggest city has announced she is stepping down formally on Monday. Ana Oramas gave the surprising news at a session of La Laguna Council yesterday, during which she cited personal reasons for her decision.

La Laguna - 14.11.2008 - Oramas is also an MP in the Spanish Parliament and it is thought the pressure of combining both jobs has become too much for her. Opposition parties have repeatedly described her as a 'week-end mayor' given her numerous absences from La Laguna. She will be replaced by her deputy Fernando Clavijo. The decision has drawn criticism from opponents, who said yesterday that she had deceived voters at the last local elections by standing and then stepping aside the following year.
