World Diabetes Day marked in the Canaries

The Canarian authorities have organised a series of events to mark today's World Diabetes Day in the islands. Regional health minister Mercedes Roldós urged the public to take a greater interest in the disease, which affects 190,000 people here (twice the national rate) and accounts for a large portion of of the health budget.

Canary Islands - 14.11.2008 - Screening facilities have been operating during the week in a number of town squares to encourage the public to check if they are at risk of suffering the condition. Thousands of diabetes information posters and brochures have been distributed to health centres and chemists throughout the islands.
