Vicepresident quizzed by judge over Norway trip

Canarian vicepresident José Manuel Soria appeared before a judge in Las Palmas yesterday to answer charges that he received an expenses-paid holiday to Austria and Norway in 2005 at the invitation of a prominent businessman who was later granted planning permission for a large holiday development.

Las Palmas - 27.11.2008 - Soria, who was head of the Gran Canaria Cabildo at the time of the trips, submitted credit card statements showing he had used his own money for the holidays. His version of events was backed by the Russian widow of the developer, Bjorn Lyng, who has since died. However, after listening to the evidence for several hours the judge decided not to drop the charges and the investgation, which was ordered by Spain's Anti-Corruption Agency, continues.
